The Huicholes: a study in symbol appropriation

Sofia Bosch
Project Description

This project relied deeply on the contextual research done about the Huicholes, an indigenous group living in Mexico. The project aimed to critique the appropriation of their symbols by Western pop culture. The project became very interesting when it turned into a “mise en abyme.” While trying to make a visual representation of the research, I fell into the same appropriation I was criticizing. My cultural baggage made it very difficult for me to graphically grasp what I had researched. The poster I have made has two explanatory booklets integrated, so that the viewer understands the research as a whole.
