Artist Statement

Alec Mathewson is a multi-disciplinary artist working in video, sculpture, and object design. Recently his practice has shifted into a hybrid of different techniques and styles that question the intersection of “synthetic” and “natural” spaces. He often plays with opposing themes, textures, and ideas to create tension and abstracted portrayals of reality and human experience. Alec’s background as a professional documentary filmmaker and video editor has greatly influenced his experimental and artistic practice, and his desire to work more with his hands while treating video as sculptural medium.
